Who Should Become an Instructor?
Individuals who wish to teach CPR certification, first aid, and other basic life support (BLS) skills can become instructors at American Heart Association (AHA) training centers. Healthcare professionals like nurses, physicians, and medical doctors, as well as emergency professionals like police officers, EMTs, and firefighters, are good candidates to become instructors. You aren’t required to be a healthcare provider to take the instructor course. If you are passionate about teaching people how to help those in cardiovascular distress, becoming an instructor will allow you to do so officially.
Instructors should have great communication skills and be passionate about providing a quality education. You should also have strong ethics and integrity. These qualities help instructors teach effectively and hold students to the highest standards. When it comes to life-or-death situations, trained individuals need to be able to remain calm. Instructors need to be able to teach students how to effectively administer care without panicking. If you have these qualities, book your course with Brooks CPR to become an instructor today.
Why Should You Become an Instructor?
Becoming an instructor broadens your medical knowledge and teaching skills. Teaching skills to another person also helps you learn the skill better. You can add it to a resume or CV, which may improve your value to potential employers. That is especially useful if you plan to go into the medical field. You can also feel good about the potential far-reaching benefits of your instruction. When you teach students to react calmly and effectively during an emergency, you are indirectly helping the injured people.
What Are the Prerequisites for Becoming an Instructor?
All instructors must be at least 18 years of age. You must also have completed and passed the AHA course for the specific discipline you want to teach. To teach BLS, CPR, and first aid skills, you must have passed the certification requirements that demonstrate your abilities. The completion card must also be current. If you have passed the ACLS course, you will only be able to teach ACLS skills.
Instructors need to have been accepted to teach at an AHA training center after passing the instructor course. You also need to have the most up-to-date AHA Provider Manual and complete the Instructor Candidate Application. If you have met all of these requirements and filled out the paperwork, then you are ready to take the instructor course.
What Does the Instructor Course Include?
The instructor course covers how to plan and prepare for teaching a class, how to instruct a class, and how to conduct written exams, skills practicing, and skills testing sessions. It also goes over how to keep your instructor status current. Instructor certification lasts two years, after which you must recertify as an instructor. The instructor course includes information about teaching AHA courses specifically. The course also covers discipline-specific instruction. If you are planning to teach BLS and Heartsaver, you will learn how to teach BLS and Heartsaver courses and not other disciplines.
After you have completed the Instructor Essentials Course, you are ready to start teaching. The first teaching session you do must be monitored by an AHA training center faculty member. They make sure you are covering every topic and skill the class needs to know to pass their own exams and confirm that your method of instruction will properly prepare the students for certification. This monitored session should be done within six months of passing the Instructor Essentials Course. After this step, you receive your instructor card and can teach on your own.
